Settlement orders shut down the grant website operation
The Federal Trade Commission said In Deep Services, Inc., doing business as Grant$ For You Now, promoted information about government grants for personal expenses or paying debts. According to the FTC complaint, consumers provided credit or debit account information for a $1.99 fee to enter a members-only section. The FTC said that section contained inaccurate and obsolete information.
The FTC also charged that the operators did not disclose recurring monthly charges of $72 to $95 or a one-time additional charge of $19.12. The release says the websites offered a “100% No Hassle Money Back Guarantee” and that a judge issued a temporary restraining order on June 23, 2009.
Settlement orders banned the defendants from selling grant-related products or services and from selling continuity or negative-option programs. They also barred unauthorized automatic debits and specified misrepresentations. Each order imposed a $9,042,070 judgment, suspended if the defendants paid taxes owed to the IRS and California and surrendered their remaining assets. The full judgment would become due if the court found that their finances were misrepresented or the taxes were not paid.
The stipulated final judgments were for settlement purposes only and did not constitute an admission of a law violation.
