Work-at-home earnings claims led to an FTC case
Mason Grace Enterprises LLC, also doing business as Mason Grace Ventures, was one of the corporate defendants in a work-at-home opportunity case brought by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC alleged that the operation took more than $7 million from tens of thousands of consumers.
The defendants promoted a program in which consumers would stuff and mail advertising letters. The FTC alleged that consumers were told they could earn up to $5,000 or more per week. According to papers filed with the court, only 10 percent received any payment, with average total earnings of $19.50 after paying $99 to $399 to participate. The letters promoted a second program involving credit booklets. Participants in that program were expected to market the booklets and generate orders rather than being paid merely for fulfilling them.
The complaint charged David S. Brookman and his companies with violating the FTC Act and the Business Opportunity Rule. A federal court entered a temporary restraining order in October 2015.
In April 2017, the FTC announced a stipulated final order banning the envelope-stuffing operation from selling business and work-at-home opportunities. The release states that a $1.2 million judgment against Brookman would be partially suspended after he paid approximately $44,200. Because that payment was stated against Brookman rather than Mason Grace Enterprises, it is not recorded as redress ordered from this company.
