Credit-repair claims led to a lifetime industry ban and refunds

The Federal Trade Commission sued Michael and Valerie Rando and their companies over a credit-repair operation called The Credit Game. The FTC alleged that the operation charged consumers hundreds or thousands of dollars for services that provided little or no value.

The complaint alleged that the defendants misrepresented the legality and effectiveness of their products and whether requested refunds would be provided. It also alleged that they sent false information to credit-reporting agencies, including false identity-theft reports, and encouraged consumers to take unlawful actions. The defendants also pitched customers a business opportunity to create their own credit-repair operations and encouraged payment with COVID-19 tax-relief funds.

The case page states that a federal court temporarily halted the operation on May 3, 2022, froze assets, and appointed a receiver. The later order halted the operations and imposed lifetime credit-repair industry bans on Michael and Valerie Rando. It also required them to turn over assets for consumer refunds.

In June 2025, the FTC announced that it was sending more than $3.5 million through checks and PayPal to 9,224 affected consumers.
