Publishing claims led to a proposed settlement
The FTC alleged that Baltimore-based Agora Financial and affiliates targeted older consumers with books, newsletters, and other publications carrying false or unsupported health and financial claims.
One publication, The Doctor’s Guide to Reversing Diabetes in 28 Days, sold for $249. Agora marketed it as a scientifically proven protocol that could permanently cure type 2 diabetes in 28 days without diet or exercise changes and claimed a 100 percent success rate. The FTC alleged there was no competent and reliable scientific evidence for the claimed cure.
The FTC also challenged promotions for Lifetime Income Report and Congress’ Secret $1.17 Trillion Giveaway. The agency alleged that consumers were falsely told they could claim hundreds of thousands of dollars in government-affiliated ‘Congressional Checks’ or ‘Republican Checks.’ Consumers instead received an investment strategy involving dividend-paying stocks and the need to risk thousands of dollars.
Agora and several affiliates agreed to pay more than $2 million under a proposed consent order. The proposed order barred the health and financial misrepresentations alleged in the complaint and required substantiation and disclosures for covered claims.
