Business coaching settlement imposed a sales ban and payment

The FTC alleged that Lift International and related defendants offered business coaching to consumers seeking to start home-based Internet businesses. According to the complaints described in the sweep release, consumers were promised substantial income, personalized training offered only to qualified participants, and an assessment of whether they qualified. The FTC said purchasers often spent thousands of dollars and were later targeted with additional sales calls, while those who enrolled were left with no functioning business, little or no earnings, and substantial debt.

The release identifies Lift International LLC as also doing business as Lift International Enterprises LLC, Guidance Interactive, and GoGo Dropship. It also says the Rasmussens and Thrive Learning sold their business to Lift International in August 2013.

Under the 2017 settlement, the defendants were banned from selling business coaching services and work-at-home opportunities. The order against Ari Monkarsh and Lift International imposed a $29 million judgment that was partially suspended upon payment of $200,000. The full amount would become due if the defendants were found to have misrepresented their financial condition.

In January 2018, the FTC mailed 7,583 checks totaling more than $2.2 million to people who lost money to the telemarketing scheme covered by the settlements.

What is not established: The supplied documents describe allegations and stipulated orders involving several defendants. They do not report an admission by Lift International.
