Pass rates and residency matches
The FTC took action against a for-profit medical school in the Caribbean, Saint James School of Medicine, and its Illinois-based operators, alleging they deceptively marketed the school’s medical licence exam pass rate and its residency matches in order to attract prospective students.
Those two numbers are the figures a prospective medical student weighs most heavily, because they stand in for whether the degree leads to practising medicine at all.
The rules charged
Beyond the marketing claims, the operators were charged with violating the Holder Rule, which preserves a consumer’s rights against a creditor who takes on their contract, and the Credit Practices Rule, which protects consumers in credit contracts. Those charges matter here because students were carrying debt for the tuition.
The order
A $1.2 million judgment against the school and its operators goes toward refunds and cancellation of debt for students harmed by the deceptive marketing.
What is not established
The only supplied document is a short case page summary. It does not give the specific figures the school advertised, the true rates, the number of students affected, or the period covered, so none of that appears here.
