The FTC alleged unsupported claims for an Amazon business opportunity
AWS LLC and related defendants sold the Amazing Wealth System, which promised to teach consumers how to build profitable businesses selling products on Amazon. The FTC alleged that defendants advertised earnings of $5,000 to $10,000 in the next 30 days and charged from $995 to more than $35,000 for the system. The defendants had no affiliation with Amazon.com.
According to the FTC, most purchasers did not earn the advertised income. The system included strategies such as posting fake product reviews, which violated Amazon.com’s rules. Purchasers often experienced store suspensions and lost the ability to sell on Amazon.com.
A June 2018 stipulated order banned the defendants from marketing or selling business opportunities and business coaching services. It imposed a judgment of more than $102 million, partially suspended when the defendants surrendered approximately $10.8 million to the FTC. A later order against Jeffrey Gomez and his companies required approximately $2.55 million in funds and assets.
In August 2020, the FTC sent checks and PayPal payments totaling more than $9.1 million to 13,348 customers who had paid for an Amazing Wealth System workshop.
