Business coaching defendants settled FTC charges
Internet Teaching and Training Specialists LLC, also doing business as Internet Teaching and Training and ITT Specialists, sold a business coaching program provided by Guidance Interactive. The program was marketed to people seeking to start home-based internet businesses. The FTC alleged that most buyers did not develop the successful online businesses they had been promised and instead ended up heavily in debt.
According to the FTC complaint, the defendants used deceptive sales tactics and falsely represented that clients were likely to earn substantial income. The FTC also alleged that the training was presented as personalized and available only to qualified participants, and that consumers were told their financial information was needed to determine whether they qualified. The defendants were charged under the FTC Act and the Telemarketing Sales Rule.
The defendants agreed to settle. The order banned them from selling business coaching services and business opportunities. It imposed a $10.2 million judgment that was partially suspended upon payment of $660,000 and the surrender of certain assets. The full judgment would become due if the defendants were found to have misrepresented their financial condition.
In June 2018, the FTC said it was mailing 3,633 checks totaling more than $969,000 to affected consumers. Each check was worth $266.78.
